Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I was in a car accident 5 years ago and have been having issues with my neck and left side of my body since. The most recent symptoms is that three fingers on my left hand (thumb, index, middle) are numb all of the time. This has continued with no change for at least 6 months. My doctor ordered PT and an EMG for carpel tunnel. PT has inproved range of motion but has done nothing for the numbness. The EMG was inconclusive. The last MRI done in 4/13 showed a bulged disk but little thinning. My team of professionals says the cause is not my neck. I am not so sure. Wondering if seeking a second opinion from a spine center is a good idea or if I should just ignore is as the doctor is recommending
Blood to that area and the fingers you have mentioned is supplied by the median nerve. Therefore, compression of this nerve in its root plexus or anywhere down there may lead to this problem.
Carpal tunnel is also one place where it can be compressed. You should consult a neuro-physician and physiotherapy should be started as early as possible so that the muscles do not get atrophy due to lack of use.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Bhadresh Lakhani
