What Does Numbness In The Hands Indicate?

My husband is experiencing numbness in his hands and arm while sleeping mostly when he is sleeping on his side. It has been slowly getting worse over the last few months and now is a nightly occurance. it wakes him and it takes quite a bit of time for feeling to return to his arms. What type of specialist should he see.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Based on the history you have shared, it can be nerve pain and possibility of cervical spondylosis needs to be ruled out as sometimes spinal or cervical vertebrae push on the nerves roots causing such numbness though many other causes of such compression does occur but needs to be evaluated on careful nervous system examination by your primary care physician.

X-ray cervical spine may also be needed. It will also rule out a cervical rib or any other structural deformity. Meanwhile start him on supplements for calcium, vitamin B12, D3, and Bisphosphonates and if numbness converts into tingling or pains or discomfort leading to disturbed sleep gabapentin may also be used.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Saddiq Ulabidin
