What Does Numbness In The Right Foot Indicate?

I January I experienced numbness in my right foot, particularly in the 3 toe region. At times I felt a stabbing pain to the point I could barely walk. That went away within a week or so but then I started feeling numbness in my right foot, then the left on and off. However from January to the present I have experienced numbness in both hands feet and legs at various times. It is generally a minor annoyance but at times it is uncomfortable. I even had an instance recently where just my left thumb was somewhat numb and very cold. Just the left thumb only which I thought was very strange. I am very concerned about all of this. Should I be concerned about this?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

Are you a Diabetic?

The symptoms you have described are in all probability due to Neuropathy. Most common cause of Neuropathy is Diabetes Mellitus. One experiences numbness, pricking or stabbing pain, paraesthesia mainly of the feet and legs, and sometimes of the hands and arms.

The diagnosis can be confirmed by a Nerve Conduction Test. If the diagnosis is confirmed, there are medicines like Pregabalin which are very helpful in improving nerve function and relief of symptoms. The dosages can be advised by a Neurologist.

It is also very important to keep the skin of the feet soft, by any good skin softner, the most cost-effective being Vaseline. In such cases, it is good to always wear footwear with insoles made of soft pressure distributing the material. Ethyl Vinyl Acetate, Poron, Silicon, Platazote are appropriate.

Thus please get your blood sugar test done as Fasting, 2 hours after food, and HbA1C which gives a 3 month average level of blood sugar.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ajit Kumar Varma
