What Does Numbness On The Left Foot Indicate?

Yesterday, I stood up and began to walk and stumbled because of numbness in my left foot. At first, I thought my foot may have fallen asleep from sitting a certain way. However, the numbness began on the top of my foot and continues about half way up my shin. I cannot lift my foot by my ankle or toes, so it drags when I walk unless I pick up my leg higher when I take a step. If I stretch my leg out front with my foot pointed out straight, I get severe shooting pain from the top of my foot up into my shin. It feels cold and numb to the touch still.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Neurological problem like neuropathy and vascular disease like that of peripheral vascular disease has to be ruled out here. For that colour doppler USG scan be done. Check vitamin B12 and serum blood glucose levels. According to cause specific treatment given. Consult physician for examination.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
