What Does On And Off Electric Shock Pain In Mouth After Taking Injection For Root Canal Suggest?

My husband complained of a throbbing pain and extreme cold sensitivity on a lower from tooth. He went to the dentist and it was decided he would need a root canal. It was performed that night. He had to get two inferior alveolar injections both of which gave him an electric shock sensation and he still was not completly numb. The dentist then had to numb the tooth directly into the nerve once it was opened up. When he got home and the anesthetic wore off he began experiencing an electric shock that would radiate down into he lower left jaw and back up into his ear about every 10 seconds. It s the worst pain he has ever experienced. It has been 3 days since his dental treatment and he still gets the electric shock but sometimes it s on the upper left and sometimes the lower left. Always starts at the site of the injection and moves forward. He also has extreme pressure on the left side. He cannot lay down becaus the pain becomes much worse. The frequency of the electric jolts has gone down but sill in excruciating pain. All the dentists and oral surgeons we have talked to have said either nerve damage from the injection that will heal over time or a TMJ problem. My question is do we need to see a neurologist and why would the pain be jumping around so much? He is taking 800 mg Ibuprofen every 4 hours and hydrocodone to sleep. He recently also started a steroid and is taking an antibiotic as well. When I have called neurology offices we can t be seen for 3 weeks. Please help give an explanation for his pain. He is unable to function at all.

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

As per your complain and presentation of symptoms electric shock like pain when the injection needle is pricked is due to direct pricking of the nerve and when the nerve is pricked there is a bout of severe pain..

Due to pricking of nerve there have been nerve injury and it is only causing sudden bouts of electric shock like pain..
It is true that the healing of the nerve can take an uncertain time period which may last from weeks to months but mostly complete recovery takes place in such cases..

As of now for pain relief medications that are helpful in relieving neurotic pain like Carbamazepine or Gabapantin has to be taken after consulting a Neurologist.
Vitamin B complex supplements are also to be taken as they help in faser healing and quick recovery..
Do warm compresses over the affected side..

Hope this helps..

Thanks and regards.
