What Does Pain Above The Waist On The Left Side Indicate?

I have a pain in the left side of my back just above my waist that is made worse with house cleaning and gardening. It gets quite painful when doing those activities and is milder or not painful when I m not doing either of those things. Standing for long periods of time is also painful. What could cause that sort of pain?

hi mam/sir,your pain might be due to paraspinal muscle spasm due to:
1)abnormal posture
2)lifting heavy weights
3)trauma that may be unnoticed.
one more important thing is to rule out any lumbar vertebral disc prolapse or disc degeneration disease.for this you may need to undergo an MRI spine.but before going for that,we can give a trial of analgesics with muscle relaxants for 1 week.most of my patients find a great relief with this trial.NSAIDs like ibuprofen or aceclofenac(for pain relief) with chlorzoxazone or thiocolchiside(muscle relaxants) can be taken twice daily after food for 1 week.also please take the following precautions:
1)as the above medications can cause or aggravate gastric irritaton, you can have tab.pantoprazole once daily before food.
2)avoidance of heavy weight lifting is suggested.
3)take care of your posture i.e;always make sure that your back is supported while sitting.avoid abnormal bending and jerks, long driving.
if even with the above treatment and precautions, you dont find any relief, you can have an ortho consultation.hope my answer is clear.other issues if any, kindly let me know.thank you.take care.bye.
