What Does Pain Behind The Neck And Across The Shoulders Indicate?

I ve been having severe pain from the base of my skull down my neck across my shoulder down my arm and into my hand. It usually comes on suddenly and is a very sharp (level 10) pain. Sometimes my hand goes numb. This has been going on for about six weeks - not every day - but seems to be more frequent and more severe as time passes. I have been taking Tylenol with codeine that I have left from when I was in the hospital in July with a leg injury. That usually makes the pain disappear but I m concerned that I m just treating the symptom and that there might be a cause that I should be aware of.

Thanks for the query. I understand your concern.
The pain in the base of skull,neck ,shoulders up to the hands along with numbness since 6 weeks ... could be due to, inflmmation of joint between 1st cervical vertebra &skull /spinal or disc problem at upper cervical vertebrae.. both the conditions creating pressure on nerve suplying affected parts
You need consultation of an orthopedic surgeon for detailed evaluation &specific management including NSAIDmedicines,steroids ,physiotherapy.
