Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is it possible to have a herpes simplex blister on the back of the tongue? I cannot see the source of pain, but it is localized on only one side and almost too far back on my tongue to even feel with my finger. I have had many cold sores on my lips and inside my nose over the years and have a prescription for Valacyclovir t hat I take whenever I experience prodromal sensations. That s usually effective at preventing an actual outbreak. The pain on the back of my throat started on Sat. and has gotten progressively worse. I am certain it is my tongue and not the soft tissue at the back of my throat. Weird and new for me. Should I take some Valacyclovir? Suggestions are welcome.
You have pain behind tongue which seems to be due to canker sore, and another possible cause is enlargement of papillae of tongue mainly lingual papillae. Need not to worry. I would suggest you to:-
- Maintain complete hygiene and do warm saline rinses.
- Also, do betadine rinses and avoid hot and spicy food.
- Start taking a supplement containing vitamin B12 and folic acid.
If the condition doesn't start improving in a week, then consult an oral physician once. The doctor may examine physically or order a blood test and prescribe steroid ointment, antibiotics (amoxicillin) or antiviral depending upon the diagnosis.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Harry Maheshwari
