What Does Pain In The Left Knee Indicate?

Was awaken with pain in left knee. It was swolen on front left side. Pain below the knee cap. Unable to put weight on it. Put cold on it. I am currently placing heat on it and took one Aleive. Never had this issue before. No injury. Did not hit it or abuse it.
