What Does Pain In The Navel Indicate?

My 16 year old daughter is complaining of a pain in her belly button. I took her to the doctor last night and they did a strep test both in her belly and throat. She is still complaining of the pain but the test have come back negative. She is also sleeping more than normal. What else can I do for her?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Based on the history you have shared, she needs to be evaluated, by a surgeon and have an ultrasound abdomen as well as x-ray erect abdomen if the pain persists. The local abdominal examination will be needed. Though it can be muscular any abdominal pathology like volvulus or intussusception should be ruled out. If it gets accompanied with vomiting or altered bowel habits should also be evaluated medically. Baseline blood workup may be needed as well. Meanwhile, OTC analgesics like acetaminophen along with antispasmodic drugs like drotaverine should be started.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Saddiq Ulabidin
