What Does Pain In The Rectum Indicate?

Hi, I have been having mild pain, discomfort in my rectum. I abuse alcohol and am 36 years old. Otherwise in decent health. Feeling of a lump or fullness in my rectum seems to come and go, but has been more persistent over the past few days. I have been taking Metamucil to deal with my loose stool. Tonight, finally had a decent feeling bowel movement, but my stool looked Riley and full of mucous. Help!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The cause for rectal pain should be evaluated by the following work up:
- Proctoscopy examination
- Stool routine micro examination and occult blood test

Proctoscopy examination will be helpful in rule out rectal ulcer, proctitis, mass et cetera like causes. Stool if shows pus cells and bacteria, then antibiotic course prescribed for that.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Parth Goswami
