Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Does Pain In The Right Hand And Thumb Indicate?
Hello, my writing hand is hurting me now quite often. It only seems to be my thumb and the part of my palm leading up to the thumb area. Therefore, I ruled out carpel tunnel. It’s causing me difficulty holding the steering wheel to drive or even just trying to carry a grocery bag. I haven’t injured myself to cause any discomfort so I think that it may be just wear and tear of my ligaments. I’ve been typing since high school and I am now in my mid forties. Any suggestion on how to ease this pain. I am thinking about temporarily getting a brace and also soaking my hand in some epsom salt.
You are experiencing this pain because of repetitive strain due to overuse. You need to rest your hand for some days. It would be beneficial to brace your hand for some days. Apply an ice pack and heat alternately to relieve pain and inflammation.
You can take an over the counter painkiller like Advil for some time. If the pain is not relieved in some days get your hand checked by an orthopedic surgeon. He may advise an X-Ray to diagnose your condition.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Nazma.amman
