What Does Pain In The Shoulder And Arm Indicate?

HI. Can trigger therapy (massage) cause nerve damage if it is incorrectly applied? I have severe pain in my shoulder and down my arm that varies from tolerable to excruciating. Exercise seems to help but it has been2 months and I am unable to function very well. I am 46 and in fairly good shape, not overweight and exercise fairly regularly.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

What I can understand is that this pain is probably from nerve entrapment, this can be in neck where the nerve exit, the causes are so many , but bad posture and heavy work or lifting are common, I don't understand if massage should do it if not very heavy pressure applied, you may need to get an x-ray or sometime an MRI to exactly know this, mostly these can better be helped by physiotherapist, with some painkiller and muscle relaxant.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
