What Does Pain On The Left Side Of The Breast Indicate?

I am 56 years old and developed a pain on my left upper side of my breast. When I cough or breath deeply, I feel a sharp pain. If I press on it as well, it feels like a bruise. I am able to function normally at my job, but am worried this might be.

1. As I'm unable to examine you directly, thus I've two opinions regarding your case/symptoms:

i. Pain [mastalgia] could be due to fluctuating hormones after menopause, or because of an infection, abscess, cyst, oral contraceptives, antidepressants.

ii. As a rule of thumb: any lump that appears after the age of 35 years should be suspected as carcinoma and refer for excision biopsy.

PS. Carcinoma of breast if detected early is completely curable, particularly in postmenopausal women, a breast lump is to be considered malignant [unless proved otherwise] and if it comes normal only thereafter lifestyle chnages, alternative medicines and medications [HRT], can be discussed.
