May I know your age and gender?
Taking into account the fact that you did not do anything to actively elicit the condition, you might like to take these possibilities into account:
1) Do you feel any lumpiness in your armpit? If yes it could be a skin infection (hidradenitis suppurativa) caused due to sweating or a swollen lymph node. In either case you should get it examined by a physician.
2) Do you have associated rashes in your armpits and your back? If there is a band like rash pattern it could be herpes zoster infection for which you will need to be started on Acyclovir(Zovirax) therapy (800mg 5 times a day for 7 days with plenty of water)
3) Use of certain deodorants and soaps can also elicit a an allergic/irritant contact dermatitis causing associated pain. If you have associated redness and soreness, you might cosider this as a possibility and consult a dermatologist
