What Does Pain Under The Rib Cage On The Left Side Indicate?

I m having pain on my left side, below the ribs and above the waist band. It feels like the stitch you get in your side when running. It hurts to take a deep breath and is tender to touch. I m also running a fever of 100.6. I have a history of kidney stones but during the previous episode did not feel this way at all - I had pain in my stomach like there was a rock in it. Could this be kidney stones or something more serious? I have an appt. with my doctor tomorrow but could not get in earlier.
