What Does Painful Neck With Low Fever In A Child Indicate?

My 5 yr old has been complaining of a hurt neck (not throat)for the last 3 days and some up about half an hr ago with a decent fever and isn t feeling well. Meningitis popped in my head IMMEDIATELY. Should I be worried? Is she safe to wait till morning to see a Dr?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query your child have symptoms of painful neck with low fever, well symptoms seems to be due to viral infection due to compromised immunity of your body and susceptibility of getting infected. Sometimes initially the infection is viral but with times secondary bacterial infection occur , which cause further complication. Need not to worry about it. For now take steam twice a day to relieve the congestion. You should take proper rest. I would suggest you to consult ENT specialist without any delay. Doctor may prescribe anti viral acyclovir, anti bacterial penicillin, decongestant along with anti inflammatory. Doctor may order throat swab test , viral culture test, and blood test to confirm the diagnosis.
