Hello,
The total
phenytoin reference range varies by age, as follows:
- Children and adults: 10-20 µg/mL
- Neonates: 8-15 µg/mL
- Toxic phenytoin levels are defined as greater than 30 µg/mL.
The following are few symptoms associated with toxic levels of phenytoin in serum:
1)
Nystagmus or rapid movements of eyeballs
2) Slurring of speech
3) Ataxia or movement disorders
4) Tremors
5) Abnormal orofacial movements
As you do not have any of the above mentioned side effects, you don't need to worry. You can get the serum phenytoin checked once again after 6 months. As of now you don't need to worry and take the phenytoin tablet as usual as prescribed. Only if any of the above symptoms appear, then you need to consult your doctor for dose reduction.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
