What Does Positive UPT Indicate After An Abortion?

Hello i am 24 yrs old and had a termination 5 months agoer the past few days i have take a few pregnancy tests all of the same brand..however i have been receiving positive results in the evening ( showed my partner too and def positive) but then when i go to test to check the next morning with the same brand the test is negative :| im really confused as i thought first morning urine would have the mosthcg..is it likely im pregnant or not? As it is all so confusing

Hallow Dear,

Positive pregnancy test on urine 5 months after an abortion would definitely be suggesting fresh pregnancy. Any abnormality of previous pregnancy (like choriocarcinoma) would not have given negative test for 5 months. We have to find out the cause for next day negative test. Following could be the reasons:

1. The commonest cause is error in the test kit.
2. If the first test was done on overnight first morning urine sample, it will give correct results since this sample has high concentration of the hormone hCG which is assessed in this test. If subsequent test is performed on random sample, you may get negative test due to dilute hormone.
3. Personal human error in performing the test.

To find out the answer to this, you have got following options:

1. Repeat the test on overnight first morning urine sample after 4 days.
2. Alternatively, you may go for Beta hCG test on the blood. hCG levels below 5 mIU/ml denotes no pregnancy while in pregnancy the levels are more than 25 mIU/ml.
3. After 8 days, go for ultrasonography which will give you direct visual evidence of the status of pregnancy.
