Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,,

Acute onset loose stools with mucus can suggest gastroenteritis. But if he is not febrile, taking feeds as usual and no blood in stools, I would have given him zinc sulfate syrup 5ml once daily for 2 weeks, and ORS solution in sips after each stools to avoid dehydration. Probiotics like ECONORM I consider in cases with >5-6 episodes / day or lasting> 5 days, but not a problem if given. If he is not getting fine by 3-5 days or the above said symptoms develop, we will need a direct consultation for antibiotic treatment.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam TK, Pediatrician
