What Does Prolonged Swelling Of Tonsil With Bump On Uvula Mean?

My tonsils have been swollen for about a year now, rarely is my throat sore, and over that course of time I have had strep throat one time, and started to clear up the day I took the medicine my doctor gave me. Everytime I ask my doctor about it he just tells me that so people have swollen tonsils. I also have mucus that runs down my throat, and i'm always having to blow my nose. I'm scared it could be hiv after looking online. I'm 5'11, 225 just lost 60 pounds though!! and i smoke a pack a day. what do you think?? i also have a bump by my uvula but the doctor never even mentions it when he sees it

Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern.

As per your complain and presentation of symptoms enlarged tonsils for 1 year is not a common finding and it can be Inflammatory Hyperplasia, as you are a smoker it can be one cause as continuous irritation to tonsils with heat, smoke and chemicals can lead to inflammation and enlargement..

Other thing is that you have post nasal drip that is mucous running down the throat, mucous in nose and it can be a sign of sinusitis and post nasal drip can also be one cause of enlarged tonsils..

Bump on uvula also indicates infection and inflammation.

I would suggest you to consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and after a through clinical examination and investigations like PNS view for sinuses and CT SCAN if required can help in confirming the diagnosis and treatment can be planned accordingly..

As of now you should stop smoking completely and do warm saline gargles.
Take anti-inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen.
Do steam inhalations and use a humidifier in your room.
Saline nasal spray can help in thinning the mucous and help in easy draining..

In case if after thorough examination and treatment the tonsils does not regress Tonsillectomy can be advised that is surgical removal of tonsils..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards..
