What Does Prostrating Extremities In Fetus Mean?

My best friend had her 20 week ultrasound today and was told that her baby has "prostrating extremities," but the Doctors had no idea what that could indicate. She is very upset, as this was a baby many years in the making. Are there any known complications indicated by such a warning sign?

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

Prostrating refers to a face downward position. I understand that in the scan at 20 weeks the baby was seen as face down position with the feet and face aligned parallel. If the rest of the report is mentioned as normal then there is no reason to worry . Sometimes it is better to get a repeat scan done after 15 days to confirm that everything is normal with the fetus. This is only a appearance such that the face may not be scanned with confirmation and not any warning sign unless such a remark has been mentioned. Please do not worry.
