I am 33. First mammogram. I had nipple discharge and terrible pain during my period for the last two months. The mammogram result was.7mm isodense nodular structure with partially ill defined margins in the central aspect of the middle third of the left breast .I am scheduled for an ultrasound today. What does this mean? The doctor has yet to talk to me about any of this. He is terribly busy. Thanks
Hello and welcome to HCM, A nipple discharge and mastalgia (pain during menstruation) suggests fibrocystic disease of breast. In fibrocystic disease thin serous or greenish colored fluid is expressed from nipple. However, mammography is required to rule out any mass lesion in the breast. The mammography shows a nodular structure with ill=defined margins. This could be dense breast tissue as seen in fibrocystic disease. Fibroadenomas are usually well defined. Carcinomas of breast are irregular and usually show calcification. Ultrasound will give more information about the lesion. After these investigations, an aspiration cytology may be required to see the cells of the lesion.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja P Wahal
