What Does Rare Epithelial Cells In The Sore Mean?

My husband had a lab test for a nasty looking sore on his foot that included: rare epithelial cells and no white blood cells ? in additional to proteus mirabilis and cocci so it looks like he has a bacterial infection and possibly a fungal infection, too. What does the rare- thing mean? And isn t the absence of white blood cells in a bacterial function unusual?

Hello and welcome to HCM,
The interpretation of the scraping taken from foot are:
There is presence of few epithelial cells and no white blood cells.
Presence of epithelial cells indicates that the sore on the foot is due to hyperplasia of squamous epithelial cells only or the sore is due to thickening of skin.
Presence of proteus mirabilis and cocci indicates presence of bacterial infection.
However, absence of white blood cells suggests that probably the infectious agent is superficial and not deep into the tissue.
Thus, the sore is due to thickening of skin according to this report.

Thanks and take care
