What Does Scan Report Showing Twin Gestation Sacs With One Viable Fetus Mean?

Hello, I am Maureen. I am pregnant. I bled last week Wednesday. Went for scan the 19th and the results read as follows Pelvic scan A gravid bulky uterus. The cavity harbours twin in utero gestation sacs. One of the sacs has a slightly irregular margin with internal echoes and no suggestion of viability. The second sac contains a Singleton active fetus and a healthy yolk membrane. CRL=9weeks +3days U/S EDD is 20th March 2016 Site of chorionic frondosum is posterior No co-existing uterine/Adnexal masses Cervical Os is closed. Summary: Twin gestation sacs, however with one viable fetus. Please can I still have my twin?

Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
By the ultrasound report, there are no doubt that there are two gestational sacs, which indicates twin pregnancy.
But presence of gestational sac only does not mean that fetus will develop in both.
From the findings mentioned in the report, it clearly states that one of the sacs is empty with irregular margins and hence there is no indication of fetal development.
The other sac has a viable pregnancy indicating 9 weeks. Expected date of delivery has been calculated as per ultrasound finding is 20th March 2016.
Since only one sac is showing fetal development, you will have single pregnancy. The other sac will automatically shrink in size and would get absorbed over sometime.
Hope the information provided is clear.
Wishing you a healthy outcome. All the best.
