What Does Severe Pain In The Wrist Indicate?

My wrist has hurt today but didn t stop me from doing what I needed to do. Now it is extremely painful. It hurts to move it and it hurts to press on it. The veins in my hands and arms are are standing up. I have a high tolerance to pain but this is really bad. I don t believe I broke my wrist. I am 58 years old. I am wondering if it could be a blood clot. I am not one to go to doctors but at this late hour I am wondering if I should go to the emergency room and get checked. I really don t want to because of the flu epidemic and because I don t want to go if it is not an emergency when they are busy with so many people but the blood clot idea scares me. My pain is probably a 9 out of 10 if I move or tough it. I never give pain that high a number.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

* As per my surgical experience, the severe pain in the wrist can be related to:
- Acute ligament sprain or strain
- Muscle spasm
- Nerve pinching related issue
- Vascular supply problems

I recommend to take an analgesic as Aleve or Tramadol after meals, local application of analgesic spray or ointment.
Consult your doctor on priority basis.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
