What Does Severe Pain Localised To Side Of Hip Bone Indicate?

Hi, what does severe pain localized to left side between hip bone and just below rib cage sound like? My boyfriend thought it was a kidney stone (has had 3 in past) , pain resolved in 3 days but now back but not as severe but moderate. Also, now diarrhea and a lot of stomach upset.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

He may be having a bowel infection, probably a viral infection, causing him diarrhea and abdominal pain. It generally should settle in a total of 5-7 days.
Meanwhile, he needs to take plenty of fluids to keep himself hydrated. Oral rehydration solutions are the best way to substitute both the water and electrolytes and they can be accessed over the counter in the pharmacy.

If he is not better in another 2-3 days or he notices any worsening or there is blood or mucus with the bowel movement he will need to see a doctor.

I hope this answers your query. I remain at your disposal in case further medical assistance is needed.

Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj, General and Family Physician
