What Does Severe Pain Under The Rib Cage Indicate?

I am 72 and have an A1c of 6.7. I have been experiencing sharp stabbing pains just at the bottom of my left rib cage over the last 6 months or so. The pain lasts an hour or so and then seems to subside. I do not have it every day,nor does it wake me at night. I am concerned about pancreatitis as I have been hospitalized with it once before. There is no vomiting or loose bowels associated with this. It never hurts the day I have a doctor appointment.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Left side pain below rib cage can be from stomach issue as well like gastritis or small ulcer.

The symptoms not suggestive of pancreatitis but still you can investigate with USG abdomen scan for further work up. According to the cause, specific treatment can be given.

For stomach issue antacid like pantoprazole can be prescribed. Consult a gastroenterologist for the examination.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Parth Goswami
