Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
HI, I HAVE A HISTORY OF KIDNEY STONES. RECENTLY I HAVE BEEN HAVING SHARP STABBING PAINS IN MY RT FLANK AREA, JUST UNDER MY RIBS. SOMETIMES IT COMES WITH MOVEMENT AND OTHER TIMES IT JUST HAPPENS. I ALSO HAVE A FEELING OF BRUISING WHEN I TOUCH THE AREA. THE PAIN HAPPENS WHEN I MOVE, OR TWIST OR JUST GET UP FROM A SITTING POSITION. HOW DO I DETERMINE IF IT IS A KIDNEY PROBLEM OR A BACK STRAIN. I VE HAD A FRACTURED PELVIS FROM A FALL IN OCTOBER AND THEN A PROBLEM WITH 3 BULGING DISCS AND I AM WEARING A BACK BRACE FOR TH EMOST PART OF THE DAY, AS WELL AS GETTING ADJUSTMENTS AND PHYSICAL THERAPY FROM MY CHIROPRACTOR. I GO FOR A RENAL ULTRASOUND AND A KUB ON 2 /12 AND SEE MY UROLOGIST ON 2/ 20. DO YOU THINK I NEED TO MOVE MY APPOINTMENTS UP OR SEE THE URLOOGIST SOONE THAN THAT? DOES THE TYPE OF PAIN I AM EXPERIENCING, SOUND LIKE A KIDNEY PROBLEM? I HAVE HAD THIS PAIN FOR OVER A WEEK NOW.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Yes, it could be the result of kidney stone, especially if associated with painful and frequent urination. But there are other possibilities such as muscle strain and abdominal problems, for accurate diagnosis do the following in the nearest medical center:
• Complete clinical assessment.
• Urine analysis.
• Ultrasound of the abdomen.
• X-ray of your back.
You can benefit from taking over the counter analgesics and antispasmodic to relieve your pain.
I hope I have answered your query. Let me know if you have any further questions.
Take care.
