What Does Severe Swelling In The Face Mean?

What does it mean when your face is swollen and its hard to eat and laugh?? What can be causing this?? My bestfriend says that his face became swollen approximately two days ago and someone told him that if he doesn't get it treated now it can go to his brain. Is he going to be ok, I am so worried.
