What Does Sharp Pain In Knee With Swollen Vein Suggest?

i just got back from dinner with my parents and as i was coming upstairs i felt a sharp pain in my left knee. when i looked there was what appeared to be a swollen vein popping out. It's very sensitive to the touch and i've never seen it before. what could it be?
