What Does Slurred Speech Post Hip Revision Surgery Suggest?

My father came out of hospital after having a hip revision and although doing very well his speech seems slightly slurred which it was not before or whilst he was in hospital. He has been prescribed various drugs including diazepam and I was wondering if this could be causing the speech problems. He is perfectly lucid whilst talking but sounds like his tongue is swollen. I was worried that he had had a mini stroke as he is 80 but he is showing no other symptoms of that.

Hi,

When was the surgery done? Yes, Diazepam can cause slurred speech along with somnolence in some. If he is in immediate post operative period, this can be from the effect of anaesthetic drugs effect also. Minor stroke also can cause the same. Kindly discuss with your doctor.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
