What Does Solid, Hypoechoic Nodule With Blood Flow In Thyroid Mean?

I have several nodules on both lobes of my thyroid. Three of which are on my left lobe. They measure 14, 15 and 26 mm. I am not sure of all of the characteristics of two of them but I know the 26mm nodule is solid and hypoechoic and has blood flow on the ultrasound. I am an RN and I have been doing some research. From what I understand these are rather indicative of a cancerous nodule. I am having a biopsy on Thursday. I am just concerned. I know the most common thyroid cancer is papillary and that it is not real aggressive. However I have a friend with this type of cancer and it has been very aggressive actually. In fact I am the sixth person at work with thyroid cancer. I am starting to wonder if there is something going on in our building that could be contributing to so many of us having thyroid issues. can you provide any information. I know no matter what the outcome I will do whatever is necessary. I just am curious I guess.

Warm Welcome. I appreciate your trust in HCM and assure you are on best portal on the globe for expert online medical services.

I have thoroughly reviewed health query you raised, and well realize all of those concerns. Being your physician, I will take care all of them today and will extend my expertise to solve the problems.

Based on your report, you are most likely having multinodular goiter which doesn’t necessarily mean thyroid cancer. Two things are needed to be determined in your case:

• Whether this goiter is toxic or non-toxic based on their hormone producing activity.
• Whether this goiter is benign or has any cancerous changes. There is about 15% chance to be malignant/cancerous in your case so you shouldn’t presume it yet.

You are advised to do thyroid function test and a FNAC (fine needle aspiration cytology) test or biopsy whichever your treating physician prefers to determine above points I mentioned. Once the definitive diagnosis is made based on tests, a detailed treatment plan will be devised for you which also include surgery.

One important cause of thyroid cancer which is relevant with your information is exposure to high levels of radiation. If many people in your building have these thyroid issues, it is recommended to inform relevant authorities to have the building checked.

Hope I addressed all the concerns you have. Let me know if you have further questions. I will be more than happy to clear any doubts. Keep a follow up to see how you doing.

Regards!
