What Does Sudden Onset Of Burning Sensation And Tightness On Throat Indicate?

I am 63 years old. This has happened a handful of times...maybe 10 times in the past 5-6 yrs. It comes on very quickly...seemingly out of nowhere. I get a burning, tightening in my throat (almost at the back of my mouth) and als a pain that goes from between my breasts, straight thru to my back, between my shoulders blades. I have never been one to get heartburn, so I m not sure if this could be heartburn, especially since it s fairly infrequent. Most of the time it only lasts 5 minutes...today it was about 15, so worried me a bit more. So maybe you can tell me if I should be concerned and what it could be. Thank you. Barbara Holtz

Cardiologist 's  Response
Hello,

Your symptoms could be related to panic attacks. But, before coming to this conclusion, I would recommend checking thyroid hormone levels. Another possible cause to consider would be seizures. I recommend discussing with your doctor on the above issues.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ilir Sharka, Cardiologist
