What Does Sudden Pain In The Upper Back And Ribcage Indicate?
Hello, earlier today I was going on a leisurely run when all of a sudden I got a very intense, sharp pain in my upper back, stretching to my rib cage and causing me to lose my breath. I was able to sit down and that eased the pain significantly. As the day has gone on the pain has lessened, but no significantly. It is very difficult for me to move, especially when I try to turn to do something. What kind of treatment can relieve this kind of pain? Thanks in advance.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
You seem to have sprain or muscle pull due to awkward movement of back while running or a vertebral or disc problem causing pressure or pinching of nerve supplying the part causing a muscle pull. Rest to the part, hot or cold pack over the counter. Anti inflammatory medicine like Ibuprofen twice a day after food with light massage with muscle relaxant cream would give relief in 4-5 days.
If not/if symptoms get worse.
You need an orthopedic doctor's consultation. Needful X-ray spine to exclude or find Spinal problem
followed by specific management.
