What Does Swelling Above A PICC Insertion Spot Indicate?

I just got out of hospital last night . had a picc line and above where the picc was is swollen and a little red. What should I do for it.? I called the charge nurse on my floor and she said unless she sees it she couldn t tell me but said it s not unusual Liz

Hello,
Thanks for the query.
It could be a thrombophlebitis. As of now you can apply thrombophobe ointment over the swelling for symptomatic relief.
If swelling persist or in case of any signs of infection, you have to consult a physician and remove the line. Keeping an infected PICC line can cause sepsis and spread of infection.
