What Does Swelling In Ankle And Calf After An Injury To The Calf Indicate?
I injured my calf 3 days ago, slamming the end of a fence post into it miday between knee and ankle. Initially it appeared as a scrape and some minor bruising. The skin did break in a few spots. I applied ice and cleaned the wound. I left it uncovered through the day, then applied antibiotic and covered the wound overnight. The skin appears to be healing, although it does weep onto the bandage overnight. Now, three days later, I notice my ankle and calf (below the trauma site) have become swollen, although not to the point of pain. I am favoring the leg, but not noticeably limping. Could I have further injury than is visible?
It is possible that depending on how traumatic this was, there could be a fracture to the tibia or fibula in the calf, but one other possibility I would consider is infection, especially if there is any redness over the area. It is hard to say without seeing it, so I would recommend having a doctor look at it if it is not getting better in the next few days.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Aaron Branch, General & Family Physician
