What Does Swelling In The Big Toe Indicate?

I have swollen big toe. Doctor decided it was gout. (Note last year my ankle swelled up and they said gout then and it was old athletic injury that inflamed). Am taking indomethacin for 2 days now. Swelling is down, pain is down, and can walk on it. Still painful and now it is turning black and blue around the joint. is this normal for gout? Side note I also got into a number of chiggers in the lake and have alot of bites on that leg. Do not see any bite around foot area.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It looks like gout from your description. You can also take Colchicine or Allopurinol. Use ice compresses to reduce information. Drink lots of water. Don't eat foods rich in purines, such sea food, meat etc.

Hope I have answered the question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
