Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
It has been eight month sense my son had surgery to repair a complete torn ACL and Menius tear he has been fine doing after two days of intense basketball practice, but today he had a little swelling which I think would be common, which most players ice their knee before and after each practice or game. He is not in no pain, but a little swelling on the outer side of his knee. Had him to soak in Espom Salt anyway. He did not take a rest between practice for the first time. He has been playing JV in order to get him condition again for the sport. He is also is trying to lose the 60 pound that he has gain all at the same time. My question is, do you think that he need to take a day in between while he is losing the weight being that is to much weight to be carrying. Do you think that soaking in Espom Salt from time to time , and drinking his celery smoothie which helps big time with inflammation ?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
In your case, there are few possible causes and if there was no injury then some other chronic disorder may be present. Without more information it is not enough to determine the diagnosis. It could be a hematoma (bleeding in the tissues) or a swollen knee joint capsule. If it's in the back of the knee then it could be a Baker's cyst. Clinical examination (and perhaps fluid aspiration if there's any) would help to determine the diagnosis. Either an orthopedics specialist or your primary care physician can do that. Until then you can try to apply ice packs (not directly on the skin - wrap them with a towel) and perhaps use some painkillers starting with paracetamol (acetaminophen) and advancing to NSAID if paracetamol is not enough and there's no contraindication for NSAID.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
