What Does Swelling In The Left Calf Indicate?

For a week, my left calf and foot has been swollen. When My right foot was like that, my doctor told me that if both were swollen, then he would be concerned. I can t seem to get rid of the swelling. I am on antiinflammatory meds. I can t think of what the real problem. I know I fell Oct 12, and I did go to the ER to treat my knee and the rest of the leg was swollen but after a week, it got better, other than my knee, the knee has a hematoma (sp). Don t know if that has anything to do with it. When I use heat, I ice afterwards. It is difficult if I have to take my husband places (he can not drive) and now we are dealing with snow. With my knee injury, my Dr office was too busy and they sent me across the hall, when the swelling and redness wouldn t go away, I called to see him again, and I had to wait 3 weeks for an appt. I am seriously thinking of going to an Urgent Care as I don t think it really is an ER problem. But I don t know.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Since you have had an injury due to fall & have history of haematoma, the symptoms that your are experiencing now can be due to complications that you have developed. You are on NSAID & did not have a proper diagnosis & treatment. It looks like you have developed 'Compartment Syndrome', you have got your nerves damaged due to decreased blood supply. This is the cause of severe pain due to which your movements are getting restricted. Don't worry the treatment is Fasciotomy, get all necessary investigations done, get diagnosed & treated. Visit a Neurologist first, get necessary medications & he will refer you to a surgeon. Take care.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
