What Does Swelling In The Legs And Ankles Indicate?

My mother age 71 broke her hip, arm and femur. The physician s have all cleared her. This happened 6 mths ago. She was walking moving and doing so well. She has a major problems sitting up with her legs just hanging off the bed and when sleeping. She crosses her legs and ankles. Her feet have been swelling a little at a time. But, now they are swollen with clear fluid. The swelling has started to crack. she has not been exercising and mostly stays in bed. I try to keep her muscles working by massaging but I m unsure what she needs to be done?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Some diseases that affect the entire body, such as heart disease and kidney or liver failure, can result in excess fluid buildup (edema) that is often concentrated in the legs and feet, leading to swelling not only of the ankles but also of the feet and lower legs.
So I suggest you to check the heart parameters and also the kidney function to confirm the cause of the swelling.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
