What Does Swelling In The Thumb Joint Indicate?

The joint in my left hand thumb is swollen as if I hit it with a hamer. It has been that way for two weeks and I donot remember hurting it. I have the beginning of arthritis in one finger of the same hand. Is there anything I might do to reduce the swelling and may be inflammation ?
