What Does Swelling On The Fingers Indicate?

Hello, My son is 9 years old. Active; he runs and plays soccer. His middle finger between his knuckle and bottom of his finger is swollen. He says it does not hurt. HI is in fourth grade and we are now noticing it. He said that he thinks it started when he was in second grade when he caught his finger in a drawer. Any thoughts on this? It has not been swollen for 2 years but could that have caused something then and be swollen now with no pain? He can move his finger just fine.
