What Does Swelling On The Ring Finger Indicate?

Thumb is swollen in a ring most of the way around just below the thumbnail. Feels like I smashed it with a hammer, but have not contacted it to cause anything like this. Started yesterday with kind of a weird nerve pain/sensation and just progressively got more painful. It has NOT gotten any worse today, but not really any better.
