What Does Tenderness And Swelling/lump On Nipple Indicate?

Hi. I woke up yesterday to my nipple being slightly tender. I sleep with my bra on and finished my period only 2 days prior. I had a look at the area last night and found a small lump where my nipple joins the areola. Iv recently been run down with a cold for few weeks. I take contraceptive pill and rrecently given a tablet for cold sores on my nose. I do get tender breast whilst on my periods but never noticed this before. My nipple seems swollen compared to the other nipple

Hi,

According to your history the possible causes of your problem are:
- Wearing tight undergarments sometimes can lead to nipple or breast tenderness
- Minor injuries to the breast tissue which usually can be unnoticed may lead to pain and swelling later
- Sometimes hormonal imbalance can cause breast pain and engorgement just after periods also
- Contraceptive pills can cause breast tenderness as a side effect
- The lump you mentioned could be Montgomery's tubercle on areola, this can lead to pain when gets infected.

You can try ice packs, analgesic and anti inflammatory tablets. If pain still persisting, please consult your gynecologist once and get examined. In case of infection, antibiotics can help. Hormonal effect can be reduced to some extent with supplements containing evening primrose oil.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Sree Gouri S. R., OBGYN
