What Does The Cat Scan S Result Indicate?

Dear doctor; I have recently been diagnosed as having experienced TIA S. In the E.R. a CT scan, as well as EKG and chemistries have been done. Follow-up with the primary doctor. He ordered a carotid artery test and a Echo-cardiogram. The carotid outcome was: 42 to 59% blockage on the (L). The Echo-cardiogram showed good blood flow. Please be so kind and let me know the interpretation of the Cat scan s result which states: MILD PATCHY PERIVENTRICULAR/DEEP WHITE MATTER . SMALL VESSEL ISCHEMIC CHANGE WITHOUT ACUTE INTERCRANIAL PROCESS IDENTIFIED. I am a retired Med. Tech. and should I not be on a blood thinner. ? I am a pure Cholesterolemia patient and can t tolerate Statins. Very concerned Sigrid.

Radiologist 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for writing in to us.

You might have had slightly deficient blood supply through small vessels in the brain causing focus of ischemia. This is a slow process and is seen in diabetics, hypertensives or in advanced aging. At 55 years, it might be a bit early for you to have these changes and a complete neurological clinical examination is suggested. At the advise of your doctor, medications might be need to be taken with regular follow ups.

The carotid outcome of 42 to 59% is mild blockage. Significant blockage is more than 75%. You may need to discuss with your cardiologist who will have a look at your cholesterol numbers before suggesting blood thinners.
