What Does The MRI Report Suggest?

I was in a car wreck almost 3 weeks ago and have done 6 PT sessions. I finally managed to get the clinic to order an MRI. Yesterday I recived the results of my MRI that stated I have a bulging dics at L1-2 and L5-S1 which are both impinging on the thecal sac. Is this serious and what are the possible treatment options?

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

You seem to have post traumatic bulging discs at L 1 - L 2 and L 5 - S 1 levels. This is due to torsion injury to the back where the discs in between the small bones have slipped backwards and are causing minimal pressure on the covering of the spinal cord called the thecal sheath. If you are feeling improvement after PT sessions and medication then it is showing good response to treatment. You may still not indulge in heavy physical activity if not comfortable. Neurogenic pain relievers and muscle relaxants are the first line of treatment and you should get well soon. If there is severe pain even after taking medications for few months then surgical treatment might help.
