What Does The Biopsy With Follicular Neoplasm - 20-30% Indicate?

i have a thyroid problem. the doctor says he wants to remove the right side of my thyroid because of a 3.6 cm nodule with abnormal cells in it. Have had biopsies sent to 2 different labs. It says follicular neoplasm or lesion - 20-30%/ What does that mean as far as cancer is concerned?

Good day,
It is very difficult ti differentiate between a benign swelling from cancer when the needle biopsy test comes as " follicular lesion". You may need further mutation studies of the specimen. There is a 20-30% risk ofcancer and you need an excision biopsy in such cases to confirm. Which means , most doctors prefer to get such swelling operated and they will look for evidence of cancer during operation itself from a larger sample ( Frozen section) and then may proceed with removal of full thyroid depending on the result of frozen section.
