What Does The Cervical Spine MRI Result Indicate?

I have a question re: MRI of Cervical spine. If one is lying in a less than functional or desirable way to avoid pain /discomfort while lying flat and without movement in an MRI machine - can that give a distorted, ie inaccurate impression of which discs, facet joints are actually compromised? Said plainly, if I lie in the MRi with my neck crooked and one shoulder lifted toward my head to avoid pain - wont they vertebrae look squished and the disc s bulging even if they aren t really that compromised. I believe this is what my spine doctor said yesterday. If this is the case - why do the MRI? I understand we might be able to see gross diversions, but... can you shed some light please?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

When a patient is not staying straight while having the MRI but is not changing the position while having the MRI, the images will be clear and it will be noticeable that you have not been straight but the vertebra will not show squished and the discs should not show bulging.

They will be not in a straight line, but the vertebral height and the position of the discs should be normal still.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj,
