What Does The Following CT Scan Report Suggest?

I did broke my elbow 4 months ago and had a surgery (distal humerus fracture). It was fixed by 6 screws. At this point I have no problem with flexion, however extension is not full yet. Few days ago I got CT scan result, which states: On saggittal reconstruction images, there appears to be a lucency inferion to the anterior matgin of the shaft of the humerus. Traversing screws are identified in both region of the capitelium and the capitelium and the trochea with lucency suggeted extended vertically through more medial aspect of the lateral epicondyle suggestive persistent fracture line in that location . As I undesrtand it means that there is some malunion. Could you explain me please, what CT report mean? Thanks, Anna

Hello,

As you mentioned about the fracture of the distal humerus fracture, and it was fixed with screws there will be few changes in the anatomy of the bone and chances of malunion occurs if the movements are initiated before 4-6 weeks of time.

Usually this malunion can be formed due to stress of the muscles happening while performing the flexion and extension of the joint. Also, if anytime the bandage got tight and went unnoticed there are the possibility of the changes what is mentioned in the CT.

What I would suggest is that meet up the orthopedist and he will have a clinical observation and post which correlating with the CT scan and Clinical observation and examination he will be able to guide further.

A CT scan report is a diagnostic procedure and not a diagnosis. So to have a diagnosis we need the clinical symptoms to correlated with the CT scan reports.

So do not get panic by seeing the CT scan report and allow the orthopedist to take the call.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
